Should you have cameras inside or outside your Airbnb?
No one likes their house getting trashed, right? No one likes to see a group of people hanging out inside the house when the place was booked for a quiet stay, right? No one likes to get that call from their neighbour or building security past midnight about a party going on without your knowledge, right?
Anyone who is an Airbnb host knows the feeling when you are not sure about a guest and you are having sleepless nights thinking about the worst possible outcomes. I am sure that sometimes you wished there were cameras installed in your place so that you can see what’s going on. I am an Airbnb host myself and I have had that feeling many times in the last three years of my hosting journey.
Casadell manages Airbnb properties on behalf of its clients. So we take extra precaution to ensure that the wrong audience do not get access to your place. We have never installed cameras in condo units because in most buildings it is not required. Plus, in some building, the building security can notify you if guests are behaving unusually. We have installed outdoor cameras before, monitoring the front and back entrance for any unusual activity.
Airbnb’s system is build on one fundamental human quality – TRUST. On the system, trust is measured by reviews from past hosts. However, there is no mechanism to develop trust on new guests, or identify scamsters or imposters. With an advanced system such as Airbnb, people can create profile and complete essential verification within minutes and there are plenty of resources available online to create a fake profile.
So I encourage the idea of installing cameras outside your unit, and if you do, I recommend to be very clear in the listing description about its presence. Despite having camera surveillance, it is important to ensure that you do your due diligence about your guests background. Also, you can find software that will allow you to summarize big chunks of camera footage in a short span of time. Otherwise, you will end up spending hours browsing through your footage looking for incidents.
Putting cameras inside the unit in common areas will deter lots of guests from booking. If you have personal belongings in your house that you think the guests might take, then make sure to store them securely.
